New York City surgeon Henry Berton Sands, 1830-1888, graduated from the New York College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1854. He subsequently progressed there from assistant demonstrator to professor of anatomy, finally becoming professor of the practice of surgery. Sands was one of the most renowned surgeons on the East coast.
